The conference that is always a feature of ArtsCross projects serves a number of purposes: it allows staff, students and those outside the project a chance to hear about what has happened and what has been discussed; it allows choreographers to speak about their experiences and academics to work together towards a work-in-progress presentation and it gives a sense of perspective about the project as a whole, the voices it represents and the themes that have emerged.
The conference in 2019 was no exception however it also featured the first appearance of ArtsCross Co-Director, Xu Rui, as he had been attending leadership seminars over the weeks of the project. He has a clarity of purpose and expression that is always welcome and his ability to communicate across cultures, languages and disciplines is commendable. His perspective, combined with our Taipei Co-Director Wang Yunyu, provides a breadth of knowledge of both Sinophone and Anglophone dance that is vital to the success of ArtsCross and it is a privilege to work with them.
This year’s conference featured presentations that were more developed as we had decided to focus on academic discussions rather than on posting blog commentaries. This approach worked well, and perhaps nothing stimulates writing as much as being in studios where work is being made and then meeting colleagues to discuss it. However the ultimate aim of presenting at international conferences was not fulfilled due to the pandemic. In fact, the additional work required to achieve online dance teaching also prevented many colleagues from pursuing their ideas further online. Only now in 2021 can we begin to work together again on a regular basis, and begin to think about ArtsCross 2022 which is planned to take place at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.
In the 2019 presentations below, there are themes that have featured in past ArtsCross projects, but the discussion is changing – we know each other more now, we can find more common ground and perhaps most importantly we can identify those concerns that are specific to one context and then, through that knowledge, often link them to another. The contexts are dynamic, the debates evolve and there is always more to discover in the ArtsCross project.
