Like Kenneth, I\u00a0was asked to\u00a0take part in\u00a0this project by\u00a0Jane Hackett. Having watched Pina Bausch’s elders project, which I\u00a0found exciting, I\u00a0believed that taking part in\u00a0a\u00a0similar experiment would be a\u00a0huge inspiration. It is! Working with Jonathan Burrows is a\u00a0joy and\u00a0opened areas of\u00a0dance that I\u00a0had previously never had the\u00a0chance to\u00a0explore. The\u00a0choreographer Frederick Ashton, with whom I\u00a0had worked during the\u00a01960s, encouraged improvisation but within a\u00a0balletic framework. With Jonathan, any movement is acceptable and\u00a0since I\u00a0haven’t danced or\u00a0performed for\u00a0some time, this was essential for\u00a0me. I\u00a0hadn’t anticipated having a\u00a0frozen shoulder either and\u00a0this of\u00a0course has restricted my\u00a0movement range but it has also caused me to\u00a0be more innovative.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, my\u00a0movement memory is still informed by\u00a0the\u00a0choreographers in\u00a0whose dances I\u00a0performed, chiefly, Bronislava Nijinska and\u00a0Ashton. When Jonathan asked for\u00a0each movement to\u00a0be given equal value, it was difficult. Both Ashton and\u00a0Nijinska required contrast, some movements should dominate over others. This approach is evident in\u00a0my\u00a0embodied style and\u00a0it was challenging to\u00a0move otherwise. Another inspirational moment was watching Brian perform the\u00a0Cecchetti port de bras, this must surely be its most perfect rendering and\u00a0a\u00a0further example of\u00a0embodied movement style. Our training allows us to\u00a0do some things but not others, at\u00a0least that is until we are aware of\u00a0this. For\u00a0the\u00a0audience, I\u00a0anticipate that watching a\u00a0group of\u00a0dancers from very different dance backgrounds will prove to\u00a0be engaging, particularly because of\u00a0Jonathan’s inspirational choreography which is both humorous and\u00a0innovative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
