We raised ideas about crossing cities and\u00a0countries, notions of\u00a0global citizenry and\u00a0&#8220;cosmopolitan&#8221; engagement, the\u00a0possibility of\u00a0translation and\u00a0transference.\u00a0My\u00a0education as\u00a0an\u00a0academic&#8211;much like my\u00a0education as\u00a0a\u00a0dancer&#8211;has served to\u00a0enculturate me to\u00a0participate and\u00a0enjoy this particular kind of\u00a0dialogue. I\u00a0anticipate the\u00a0beginnings of\u00a0generative debate and\u00a0deliberate research.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the\u00a0back of\u00a0my\u00a0mind, I\u00a0heard my\u00a0son ask, what kind of\u00a0group is this? He and\u00a0I\u00a0had recently been talking about what groups of\u00a0animals are called in\u00a0English: a\u00a0parliament of\u00a0owls, a\u00a0romp of\u00a0otters, an\u00a0unkindness of\u00a0ravens, a\u00a0dazzle of\u00a0zebras. He is in\u00a0dance class, and\u00a0wanted to\u00a0know what a\u00a0group of\u00a0dancers are called. Are we called a\u00a0flock of\u00a0dancers like birds, or\u00a0maybe a\u00a0lamentation of\u00a0dancers like swans, he asked? (Maybe if you&#8217;re a\u00a0Graham dancer, I\u00a0joked. Huh? he said).<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0though my\u00a0son asked a\u00a0literal question, it resonated in\u00a0me in\u00a0important ways both literally and\u00a0metaphorically as\u00a0I\u00a0sat in\u00a0the\u00a0lecture room at\u00a0The\u00a0Place. How we identify ourselves together (and\u00a0apart) as\u00a0academics must mean something. In\u00a0many ways, it frames the\u00a0terms of\u00a0engagement. Are we a\u00a0cosmopolitan of\u00a0academics? A\u00a0skeptic of\u00a0academics? A\u00a0translation of\u00a0academics?
