I\u00a0was particularly fascinated by\u00a0the\u00a0responses of\u00a0passersby. Would their reactions interrupt or\u00a0break the\u00a0flow? Londoners, to\u00a0my\u00a0great delight, proved to\u00a0be remarkably “professional” spectators. They did not disrupt the\u00a0flow; instead, they became part of\u00a0the\u00a0work itself.<\/p>\n

One image stays with me from rehearsal: in\u00a0the\u00a0middle of\u00a0the\u00a0lawn where Work of\u00a0Fai was being performed, a\u00a0young man sat reading a\u00a0book. Completely undisturbed. Even as\u00a0dancers surrounded him in\u00a0a\u00a0circle, he did not so much as\u00a0look up. He was not ignoring the\u00a0performance \u2014 he was, in\u00a0his own quiet way, part of\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Ruping\u2019s Work had no music. An\u00a0elderly man nearby turned his own radio to\u00a0maximum volume, adding music to\u00a0the\u00a0piece in\u00a0his own interpretation. Children ran back and\u00a0forth, eager to\u00a0join the\u00a0dance. During Ma\u2019s rehearsal, a\u00a0gust of\u00a0wind swept dry grass and\u00a0dust from the\u00a0ground into my\u00a0eyes. These random occurrences \u2014 utterly impossible in\u00a0a\u00a0theater \u2014 were precisely what made the\u00a0experience so thrillingly unique. The\u00a0accidental became part of\u00a0the\u00a0aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Lately, I\u00a0have been reflecting deeply on\u00a0the\u00a0definition of\u00a0contingency. Our group has held discussions around this term. I\u00a0am drawn to\u00a0this concept, for\u00a0I\u00a0believe events do not unfold following preset logic. Variable factors emerge spontaneously on\u00a0site. They are encounters arising from external circumstances, beyond the\u00a0control of\u00a0choreographed scripts.<\/p>\n

Distinct from a\u00a0mere accident, contingency denotes latent possibilities inherent within a\u00a0given situation.<\/p>\n

Within the\u00a0open public space of\u00a0Danscross (Artscross is known as\u00a0DansCross in\u00a0Beijing), shifting light and\u00a0shadow, wandering pedestrians, wind, onlookers\u2019 gazes and\u00a0ambient sound all count as\u00a0inherent onsite conditions. Dancers do not strictly follow fixed movement sequences. Instead, they embrace real\u2011time variables and\u00a0incorporate spontaneous encounters into creation. Each performance evolves into a\u00a0one\u2011off, instant\u2011generated moment.<\/p>\n
