The\u00a0dancers, have knowledge, experience or\u00a0are at\u00a0least familiar with Chinese traditional dance, with the\u00a0exception of\u00a0Western heritage London Contemporary Dance School dancer whose dance background is moons apart. It is important to\u00a0acknowledge the\u00a0gap in\u00a0cultures, and\u00a0the\u00a0white dancer partaking in\u00a0this project raises the\u00a0question for\u00a0her: <em>Appropriation? or\u00a0Respect?<\/em> \u00a0Encountering a\u00a0form so foreign to\u00a0them poses the\u00a0reflection of\u00a0how much knowledge of\u00a0the\u00a0culture do they need to\u00a0have to\u00a0perform loyally, to\u00a0understand the\u00a0movement and\u00a0allow a\u00a0respectful embodiment of\u00a0culture. This reflection is countered by\u00a0a\u00a0number of\u00a0questions, questions that with a\u00a0desire to\u00a0honour the\u00a0culture become sensitive. The\u00a0fear of\u00a0repercussion, of\u00a0wrongdoing, killing the\u00a0curiosity, or\u00a0perhaps it is more appropriate to\u00a0say, the\u00a0desire to\u00a0ask. My\u00a0question in\u00a0this is, how do we lower the\u00a0stakes so that the\u00a0research goes beyond the\u00a0execution and\u00a0enters a\u00a0world of\u00a0understanding. Perhaps, allowing space for\u00a0a\u00a0conscious incompetence (a\u00a0known lack of\u00a0knowledge) to\u00a0dive into a\u00a0wider pool of\u00a0unconscious incompetence (not knowing what we don\u2019t know) and\u00a0over time, grow in\u00a0familiarity.
