ResCen: Outside Looking In Seminar

‘Outside Looking In’ was a day-long seminar devoted to allowing participants an inside look into the specific practices and concerns of all of the ResCen Research Associate Artists. Each artist led a workshop, discussion or presentation. In the evening Chris Bannerman presented a paper ‘Intuition and craft: an eyewitness account’ with Rosemary Lee and Graeme Miller. This was followed by further discussion and debate with all of the Research Associate Artists and the audience about key issues that had arisen throughout the day.

Session 1 12.00–1.30pm:
‘bodydataspace’ was a presentation by Ghislaine Boddington and Armand Terruli of material from their recent telematic and remote connection work and vision around new projects involving the live body, data and space to stimulate further discussion on tele-presence and inter-authorship in creative practice.

‘Movement twisters, knots and puzzles’ was an open rehearsal where choreographer Rosemary Lee worked with dancer Henrietta Hale to generate movement material both improvised and set from complex movement tasks.

Session 2 2.30–3.15pm:
‘The Outer Limits’ was a podium conversation with Graeme Miller and playwright and actor, Tyrone Huggins in which they discussed altering states and building environments for creative thought.

‘Reflections’ was a workshop demonstration with choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh and dancers Rathi Govindarajoo and Navala Chaudhari in which Jeyasingh reflected on the recent vocabulary that she has created in the studio and her aspirations for what it might convey.

Session 3 3.30–5.30pm:
‘Instant Composing’ was a hands-on workshop with composer Errollyn Wallen and cellist Sarah Suckling in which participants experienced for themselves the process of composing. At the end of the session, Sarah performed each of the participants’ new compositions.

‘Engaging with Absence’ was a discussion and demonstration led by Richard Layzell with Research Fellow Joshua Sofaer on the role of other selves and other voices in the creative process.
