Composing and Performing in the Age of Globalisation:
Errollyn Wallen at London 2012 Paralympic Games

Date: Tuesday 27 November 2012, 6:00pm
Venue: Steinway Hall, 44 Marylebone Lane, Wigmore St, London W1U 2DB

The symposium explored the creative conditions of writing and performing music for a global event in reference to the range of themes developed for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic games: enlightenment, human rights and the homecoming of athletes. The themes were realised in musical composition, communal participation, emotional reach and through scopes of architecture, audiences and worldwide media. The symposium featured video extracts from the world premieres of Errollyn Wallen's Principia and Spirit in Motion; the artist reflected on these extracts and responded to questions and comments from the audience.

The evening was introduced by Dr. Ola Johansson, who outlined a framework for the challenges of artistic performances in the age of globalisation. Errollyn Wallen developed and explored this further by examining her own experiences and insights and offered a personal perspective on her work for the London Paralympics 2012. The symposium concluded with a question-and-answer session open to the public, which was followed by refreshments and informal discussion.

The event was chaired by Dr. Ola Johansson, Reader in Contemporary Performance Practice at the Centre for Research into Creation in the Performing Arts.
