The Motivation of the Artist
Tuesday 25 May 2004, 7pm

The Clore Studio
Royal Opera House
Covent Garden
London WC2E 9DD

The ResCen Research Associate Artists and Chris Bannerman, Head of ResCen explored the impulses that instigate their work and the ways in which they have sustained this creative energy throughout their practice. Together the ResCen artists represent decades of knowledge, skills, craft and experience, the motivation that fuels their work is a vital factor in their practice. Questions that were discussed were: what is motivation? Does it vary at different stages of an artist’s career? What have been key, or significant moments in the artists’ practices when creative motivation was lacking, or underwent change? What keeps artists engaged in their practice today?

Following feedback from participants at previous ResCen seminars, there was no invited guest at this particular seminar in order to allow fuller debate with those who attended the seminar.

‘The Motivation of the Artist’ introduced a theme that was discussed further in the subsequent seminar ‘Motivation: the artist and the psychoanalyst’ in September 2004 with Dr Hanna Segal, the eminent author and psychoanalyst.

ResCen participating artists: Ghislaine Boddington, Shobana Jeyasingh, Richard Layzell, Rosemary Lee, Graeme Miller and Errollyn Wallen
Chair: Chris Bannerman, Head of ResCen
