A one-day seminar
Wednesday 3 May 2006
The Portico Rooms
‘Performance as Knowledge’ aimed to examine the past and present position of archiving live performance in England, and to encourage discussion about future provision in this area.
Rt Hon Lord Smith of Finsbury, Director of the Clore Leadership Programme gave the opening address. This was followed by a variety of presentations, plenary sessions, group discussions and an ‘open space’ when all delegates could nominate issues to be discussed later in the day.
Issues that were examined throughout the seminar included: the range of existing archive provision; gaps in the provision; achieving successful co-ordination and distribution of what is available; solutions for the current and future provision of archiving; funding; and dissemination in the digital age.
The seminar was attended by invited delegates only. Delegates included representatives from Arts Council England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, V & A Theatre Museum Archive, The British Library Sound Archive, and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, as well as dance, theatre and live art practitioners.
